Superior
(I)
The
performance demonstrates that the group is able to meet all
technical demands of the musical elements with precision and no aural
evidence of strain. The
Musicality of the performance demonstrates an acute awareness
of the composer's intent and desire. It is, to all
appearances, free of technical errors and shows close
attention to the music's expressive features. The
director demonstrates an ability to clearly communicate his
interpretative requirements to the group, and the performers
respond immediately and accurately.
Excellent
(II)
Technical
demands are met with precision and the musical requirements
are demonstrated with integrity in meeting the composer's
intent, desires, and instruction. It is an authentic
reading, but is marred by noticeable technique errors and
intonation defects. The ensemble show the results
of sound fundamental training, but the performance lacks the
polish and finesse necessary to qualify for a rating of
superior.
Good
(III)
Technical
demands interfere somewhat with precision, though musical
requirements are demonstrated in meeting the composer's
intent, desires, and instruction. It is an acceptable
reading, but is marred by a few serious technique errors and
tone problems. The ensemble shows the results of
sound fundamental training most of the time, but errors
occasionally detract from the performance.
Fair

Technical
demands are beyond the ability of the group. Precision
is lacking throughout the piece. The musical
requirements are not met. There are many serious errors.
The ensemble shows a need for fundamental training throughout
the performance.
Poor
(V)

demands are beyond the ability of the group. Some
students are lost. Portions of the piece are not
recognizable. The ensemble may be unable to complete the
performance.
